An editorial calendar is a planning document that can help you track story ideas, markets, and future publishing opportunities.
The editorial calendar is the document that helps you organize, strategize, plan, market, and ultimately publish these relevant pieces. It also helps you maintain a steady income stream.
It works by helping you to see the needs of clients and markets, and spot content themes or targets so you can match your stories and fill those needs.
This means publications get stories that support their issues, and you get paid.
Another benefit is that it keeps me on track. I can look ahead, watch for deadlines, drop story ideas around strategic dates so I know when to pitch, identify the best times to target specific markets, and ensure that I have a constant flow of pitches and paid assignments rotating through my schedule.
On this week’s Simply, Write, I go in-depth on ECs and how I use one to map out my publishing moves and a bunch of other things that help me keep the assignments flowing.
When you are ready to make your own, here’s how to start.
