#Throwback Thursday
It’s Friday-Eve; and for my freelance friends out there in the world (or anyone thinking about starting a freelance writing career), this podcast is especially for you.
I’m feeling the fatigue of the work week just like everybody else, but I’m feeling a little more energized now, now, after listening to career freelancer, Polly Campbell’s Simply Write podcast.
Elisabeth Rourke here, Polly’s editorial assistant, and the class of 2004’s voted most likely to gray in her twenties, and today—today, my freelance compadres—we’ll approach the topic of freelance writing from a side that doesn’t get much play.
If you follow Polly as closely as I do, then you know Polly is a pro who loves freelancing and the many benefits it provides (here’s a quick link to Polly’s latest Substack article on the 3.5 non-money related reasons about why she likes freelancing).
Six-Figure Freelancer
In episode 127, from May 8, 2023, Polly interviews freelancer Jen A. Miller on how she got to a six-figure income and the misconception that freelance writers can’t sustain a writing career without a bread-winning partner.
So, how does Jen do it? Hard work and good writing, obviously. But that hard work includes market savvy, skill diversification, community-building, and an openness to new opportunities.
Jen talks about what freelance writing can be and provides a roadmap to get you there, plus a series of e-books titled Notes From A Hired Pen.
“You have to understand what is hard work and what is bull****, and you have to be able to break through the bull****.”
Well put, Jen.
If you’re in the market for some freelance writing advice, then this is the Simply Write podcast episode to listen to.
You can find Simply Write on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Happy freelancing and TGI-almost-F,
- E
