Find Your Curiosity
Write the things you want to read, but when you feel like the work stalls, don't quit, instead find something about it that interests you about what you are working on and keep going.
When deciding what to write about, I often tell new writers to follow their energy. It doesn’t always lead to a book or essay, and it won’t always result in a publishable piece—most things don’t. But that little piece of advice will get you writing. Get you excited again, and that alone will take you down a path of possibility.
Of course, there have been times throughout the years that I’ve forgotten that myself. I’ve taken jobs not because they were exciting, but because my daughter needed glasses, and a backpack for school.
Sure, writing is my passion and it is also my job and I need the paycheck.
Write What Excites You, Sure, And Other Stuff Too
I’ve written pieces about topics that I cared nothing about, at least in the beginning. And like you, I’ve sat through the longest meetings where the most interesting thing was watching the woman on Zoom stuff her face with salad. I mean…
But lately, that advice to follow your energy and write what excites you has been smacking me around.
