Easy Practices That Help Me Write
I'm pretty squirrely during the summer, but these things help me get the writing done.
I always feel a little frayed during summer. It’s harder to schedule interviews with university sources for articles and authors for the podcast because so many are traveling or blocking time out with their families. My daughter is home, and her schedule is different than mine, which means more disruptions than I’m used to.
And, let’s face it, I’m squirrelly. The sun is out, and it’s mild in Oregon, and there are holidays and vacations and I want to read out on the deck and go golfing in the afternoons and drink cold cocktails with friends at an outside bar.
My mind is all over the place. And often, it’s all over the place when I sit down to write.
Five Easy Practices That Help Me Focus My Writing
And even during these days when it can be harder to get a sentence out, there are five practices I use to get down to it. Five things that I know make me a better writer even when I’m slacking.
They might help you too.
Don’t be a show-off. You don’t need fancy notebooks or pens (though I love them whole-heartedly). And stay away from tangents. Flowery phrases. Avoid convoluted sentences and fancy words, and just get down to it. Get the words on the page. Use the limited time you have, and stick close to the focus of the piece.
